The Rise and Rise of Mobile Internet
There is currently a population explosion across the world: in the number of mobile devices that is! While the amount of people in the world grows at around 1.2% annually (that might not sound like much but it's equivalent to an extra two people every second), the amount of mobile devices grows five times as quickly. At current growth rates, there will be more than 11.6 billion mobile devices on the planet by 2021.
These figures make it clear (or rather, clearer than ever) that those involved in the ecommerce world need to be actively targeting the mobile generation. It has been more than two years since mobile internet access overtook desktop internet access and the two forms are moving further and further apart. Estimates on exact figures vary but we can be certain that well over 55% of web pages are now viewed from a mobile device, a number that is growing all the time.
Time spent using mobile devices continues to increase, driven in no small part by mobile-only social networks such as Snapchat and Instagram. Apps account for the most time spent using mobile devices but a significant amount of time is also spent on mobile internet sites, particularly those related to shopping. More than two-thirds of people in the UK own a smartphone, another number that continues to grow rapidly.
